It has been uncanny, how many of our recent clients have been compelled to buy and sell their existing home to accommodate an aging family member. In our search to accommodate their needs we have found that many homes with an “in law” have far too many stairs for an elderly person to navigate. 

In recent years, construction of mega colonials with lots of square footage which can easily assimilate new family members into the home fail to address the needs of an aging population.  Most are standard colonials- with the ½ bath on the main floor.  First floor master suites are rare.  Try finding a home with a first and second floor master. Now there is a challenge!  As we all get a bit older and may have the need to care for aging family members- perhaps as the need arose for 55+ housing, maybe blue prints for truly functional “in law” accommodations should be added to the mix of new construction!
